One moment will change these three women’s lives forever. And the secrets they’ve been keeping could destroy them all.
“No one ever told me how selfish love it. How it eats you up. How many games you have to play to get what you want.”
Thank you so much to Harper Collins for this gorgeous proof copy of Cross Her Heart. I’ve read some of Sarah Pinborough’s other books but this is my first time reading one of her thrillers. I remember Behind Her Eyes being discussed frequently on twitter and litsy last year but I somehow never bought a copy (more miraculously, I somehow still haven’t had the ending spoiled!). After reading this, I’ll definitley be buying it as soon as possible though as I can’t wait to see if it’s as good as this one.
“I know how that rage can lead to terrible things. Can leave someone with regrets like tombstones which have to be carried through life, back-breakingly heavy and deserved.”
The story alternates point of view between Lisa, her sixteen-year-old daughter Ava, and her best friend Marilyn. In part 3, there are also chapters written from the perspective of the person wanting revenge on Lisa, allowing the reader a little insight into their motivations and shared history. Every character has secrets, some much larger and more dangerous than others though. I thought the way Sarah Pinborough parcelled out the reveals constantly heightened the tension and kept me gripped from start to finish. I kept saying “one more chapter” as I couldn’t bear to put the book down.
“You see what you want to see. You believe what’s in front of you.”
I love crime books so it was a pleasure to find another author who can plot such twisty thrillers, full of unexpected turns and reveals. The characters were well fleshed-out and Lisa, Ava, and Marilyn were easy to empathise with – which is actually incredible considering the dark past one of them is hiding. The book ended with a satisfying resolution, continuing to surprise me until the final page. I can’t wait to read Behind Her Eyes as I enjoyed Cross Her Heart so much. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys crime and thrillers.
