Ten Character Traits I Love

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and you can find all the information and upcoming prompts over on her blog. It’s such a fun idea and I love reading everyone’s posts and adding to my book wishlist.

This weeks prompt is personality traits I love to see in bookish characters. I’ve tried to stick to distinct traits but there will inevitably be some overlap.

I love characters that adore books and reading. It’s just so easy to relate to them.

Example: Lazlo Strange from Strange the Dreamer

Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Genuinely funny characters are some of the most memorable for me as I often remember their jokes for ages afterwards.

Example: Alex Claremont-Diaz from Red, White & Royal Blue

Characters that are willing to break the rules and like to think outside the box are often some of the most successful.

Example: Fred & George Weasley from Harry Potter

I’m a sucker for a Byronic hero – rebellious, arrogant, and darkly, enticingly romantic.

Example: Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre

Receptive and non-judgemental characters are fantastic, especially when it concerns the supernatural/mystical.

Example: Gansey from The Raven Boys

The Scorpio Races

I will always root for characters that stubbornly stick to their guns despite everyone saying they’re wrong simply because they challenge the status quo.

Example: Puck Connolly from The Scorpio Races

I find it fun to read confident characters that almost veer into cocky because they’re the opposite of me. It must be amazing to have that much self-confidence.

Example: Aelin from Throne of Glass

Circe by Madeline Miller

All characters need to be fully fleshed-out but some feel so real that it’s like being granted access to their lives.

Example: Circe from Circe

I love characters that are passionate about living life on their own terms even when it’s dangerous to do so.

Example: Vasya from The Bear and the Nightingale

Clockwork Angel

There’s some overlap here with brooding, but characters with mysterious backgrounds and tortured backstories are irresistible to me. Especially when they try to push people away despite desperately wanting to be loved.

Example: Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices

What are some of your favourite traits that guarantee you’ll love a character?

Great list. Vasya is one of my favourite characters, all of her traits are things that I like.

I love all those traits too! And I really like fiery, fierce characters. That’s kind of the combo of fearless and stubborn

    Hallo, Hallo Rachael,
I am in LOVE with your book photography – as tweeted about prior to this comment! I would love to do more with my own book photos in the future but for now, their on the simplier side of the ledger. I wanted to ask you – where did you find those lovely bookmarks and pins? I adore the graphic designs of both – they might have been inclusive of book boxes but I just had to ask!!
Also I know it might be considered meta but I really love when characters are as bookish and geeky as we are ourselves; especially if the author handles it well with a balanced plot, an intriguing hero/heroine and takes us on this fantastical story!!
You and I share that in common – characters who take the reins of their life and live by their own terms & definitions – I think nearly all the characters I’ve highlighted today over on my blog are the epitome of that statement, too!
I will not soon forget your bookish photo collage entry for this TTT!!

Thank you so much! Most of the bookmarks are woodmarks from Ink & Wonder Designs (https://www.inkandwonder.com.au). If there’s a specific design you want to know more about then just let me know.

For the pins, Constant Vigilance is from Fable & Black (https://fableandblack.co.uk), Lumos is again from Ink & Wonder Designs, Anything’s Possible is from Nerdy Post (https://nerdypost.com) and Hogwarts Letter is from Lula Rocks (https://lularocks.com).
