Top 5 Debut Authors of 2019

Before I write my top ten books of 2019 post, I thought I’d select my top five debut authors of the year. I love discovering new authors and I’ll be eagerly awaiting any future books from these incredibly-talented writers.

👑 Casey McQuiston 👑

Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

No surprises here! I’ve been vocal about my love for Red, White & Royal Blue since I read it this summer and I can’t wait for One Last Stopcoming in 2021. RWRB is my feel-good book of the year.

🗝 Alix E. Harrow 🗝

The Ten Thousand Doors of January was one of the best fantasy books I read this year and it’s awe-inspiring to know it was written by a debut author. If you liked The Starless Sea then you need to read this.

🧙‍♀️ Stacey Halls 🧙‍♀️

The Familiars

The Familiars is a historical novel set during the Pendle witch trials, with great characters, an atmospheric setting, and beautiful prose. I already have her next book, The Foundlingpreordered.

🦷 Margaret Owen 🦷

One of my favourite YA fantasy books of the year was The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen. It has a unique magic system, rich world-building, a wonderful romance, and fantastic humour. The sequel, The Faithless Hawk is one of my most-anticipated releases of 2020.

🏜 Hafsah Faizal 🏜

I adored We Hunt the Flame when I read it ealier this year. The prose is beautifully lyrical and the characters are complex and memorable. It featured clear and layered world building and I can’t wait for the sequel, We Free the Stars.

Great choices! I’ve read three of those and agree with how great they were.
